SINGAPORE, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Singapore has launched the Restaurant Industry Safety and Security Watch Group, bringing together the police and members of the Restaurant Association of Singapore to strengthen protection against crime and security threats in the food and beverage sector.
Speaking on Tuesday, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Sim Ann said that restaurants in other countries have been targeted in attacks on crowded public spaces, underscoring the need for vigilance.
"As a major food hub and tourist destination, Singapore's vibrant restaurant scene must be vigilant to safety and security threats," she said.
Sim also urged the industry to play a proactive role by sharing information on crimes and scams with employees and customers. She noted that more than 51,000 scam cases were reported in Singapore in 2024, and the food and beverage sector was not spared.
The new industry watch group is the 10th of its kind established since 2008. Others have been set up for sectors including hospitality, manufacturing, chemicals, public entertainment, retail, finance, logistics, and point-to-point transportation.
