LOS ANGELES, California: California has now recorded over 50,000 deaths from COVID-19, representing more than ten percent of the total pandemic deaths in the United States.
Additionally, 806 deaths have now been reported in Los Angeles County.
"It is heartbreaking to report on this large number of additional deaths associated with COVID-19, and a devastating reminder of the terrible toll the winter surge has taken on so many families across the county," said Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County's health director, as reported by the Associated Press.
California is the most populous state in the United States and has reported the largest number of pandemic deaths. However, in ranking the number of cases per capita, California ranked 25th.
The pandemic was responsible for 25,000 deaths from March through December 2020 in California. In the next two months, the death toll doubled to 50,000.
Officials have noted that deaths are 38 percent higher in communities where the median income is less than $40,000.
Meanwhile, the overall drop in infections is allowing California to slowly lift restrictions on businesses and lockdowns. Further, Gov. Gavin Newsom has said he would reopen schools soon.
